I got an email recently and it seems that Scrappy the Happy Scrapbooking Penguin was on vacation but the cute mascot of Scrapbook.com has returned.  In addition to blogging about all the newest products featured on their site, it seems that Scrappy will be trying to keep everyone in the loop with important news, helpful videos and anything else that might be interesting.

The Danger of Magnetic Photo Albums

March 11, 2011  |  free resources  |  ,

I came across a really good tip inside the free E-Book that Scrapbook.com sent me for signing up for their newsletter.  Apparently, Magnetic Photo Albums can harm your photos.  Here is a copy and paste straight out of the E-Book:

“Magnetic photo albums  (albums with sticky pages covered in clear acetate) have pages coated with an acidic adhesive that will severely damage or destroy your photos. If the adhesive imbeds itself into the back of photos you may not be able to remove them. Should you have photographs in such albums, remove them as soon as possible. Your posterity will be grateful for the rescued memories.” -Jill Davis

GASP!  So what do you do if you’ve got photos in there that are stuck and won’t come out without some intense fervor that may have an even more immediate and damaging impact on your photos?  Jill gives a great solution: floss!

“If your photographs are “stuck” to the pages in a magnetic album, carefully work a tightened strand of dental floss between the photo and the page or slightly heat the pictures with a blow dryer. If your photos are still immovable, color copy or scan the entire page and use the replicas in your scrapbooks. If you want to keep the original album with the stuck pictures, store it in a safe, dark, cool and dry place.”

Brilliant!

Scrapbookcrops.com

March 8, 2011  |  free resources  |  ,

Scrapbookcrops.com is a website dedicated to helping scrapbookers find crops and other scrapbooking events in their own home town.  Unfortunately, this site appears to only have categories for locations in North America whereas scrapbooking has become a global phenomenon.  Registration is free and once completed you can post your own events or crops on the site.  Fabulous!

Become a Professional Scrapbooker

I found this great article on Scrapbook.com, it discusses how to become a professional scrapbooker.  That’s right, someone who is actually paid to scrapbook.  In order to be paid for doing something like this, you need to make the leap from hobbyist to entrepreneur.  An important aspect that this article sort of glosses over is getting your first clients, the most important one being that very first client that is willing to pay you to preserve their family’s memories.  Something that will undoubtedly prove helpful is a portfolio detailing the work you’ve done previously on your various scrapbooks.  The easiest way to do the portfolio would be to take pictures of your finished scrapbooks and put these online or print them off.  Hopefully you have an artistic variety to show off and don’t stick with the same theme or group of themes.  Since you’re creating a scrapbook for someone else’s family you’ll need to be able to satisfy this client’s artistic inclinations, whatever they might be.  The article does mention that some of the best business is generated by word of mouth and having a happy first client is a great step towards becoming a professional scrapbooker.

More Peanut Butter and Chocolate!

October 15, 2010  |  free resources  |  ,

It’s been a while since I’ve had the Chex Muddy Buddies, AKA Chex Puppy Chow.  Personally, I like the Muddy Buddies name.  It’s a peanut butter and chocolate recipe, and we all know what happens to dogs when you give them chocolate.  I would hate to see a confused child try feeding this to a dog.  And Puppy Chow sounds so unappetizing…

I was first introduced to this treat in grade school.  I used to make it a lot because it has such a quick and easy prep and implementation.  Fun to make with the kids.

The recipe says that you can use Rice Chex, Corn Chex, or Chocolate Chex.  I think it’s best with the Corn Chex.  It makes a great Halloween party snack.

Interesting Facts About the Rise of Scrapbooking

October 4, 2010  |  free resources  |

I dug this stuff right out of Wikipedia:

- In 2007 a survey indicated that this hobby had surpassed golf in popularity in the U.S.: one in five households has someone playing golf; one in four has someone involved in scrapbooking.

-Over 25 million people in the United States alone consider themselves to be scrapbookers.

-Almost 30% of all U.S. households have at least one family member who scrapbooks.

-Scrapbooking is the fastest growing sector of the craft and hobby industry and now considered to be the third most popular craft in the nation. From 2002 to 2004, sales of scrapbooking products increased by over 27% across the United States.

Scrapbooks.com Layout Gallery/Design Team

I’ve been finding incredible inspiration over at Scrapbooks.com lately. Their design team is AWESOME! I love scraplifting their ideas on a Friday night :) It makes me so much more productive… They are very innovative ladies, but the layouts are still simple enough that I can break them down and re-create them with my own supplies and photos.

Keep up the great work ladies!
